Balancing Your Hormones- Naturally

“The use of Hormone Replacement Therapy over the past decade has resulted in an estimated 20,000 extra breast cancers”  (Lancet Journal 2003) Many women have trouble with their hormones.

Women feel changes in their hormone levels during specific times of the month, often referred to as PMS those dreaded three letters.  Menopause is also a significant period in a women’s life in which her hormone levels experience a gradual and permanent decline.  Doctors often recommend Hormone Replacement Therapy, (HRT) which has recently come to light as a risky and dangerous treatment.

A growing body of evidence suggests that HRT may increase the risk of breast cancer and strokes, up to twice the risk according to the New England Journal of Medicine.  Instead of taking these large risks to regulate your hormone levels, there are several key things you can try naturally that should help regulate hormone levels.  One key treatment is to improve your diet.

There are ten key rules to follow in order to improve your hormone levels in respect to your diet:

1.  Eat whole foods.
2.  Eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables.
 3.  Eat 4 servings of whole grains.
4.  Avoid any form of sugar.
 5.  Combine proteins with carbohydrates.
6.  Eat cold-water fish.
 7.  Eat organic eggs.
 8.  Eat seeds and nuts.
9.  Use cold-pressed seed oils (flaxseed).
10.  Minimize your intake of fried and fatty foods.

It is vitally important to take good supplementation such as multivitamins, digestive enzymes, calcium, biotin, vitamin E, and vitamin D.  Some herbs have been shown to be effective, in particular, Black Cohosh, Licorice root (low cortisol levels), and Siberian Ginseng (high cortisol levels).  Some of these vitamins and herbs can affect other medications and you should consult a physician before starting any of these supplements.

These recommendations can help for many other female problems such as infertility, PMS, depression, decreased libido, fibrocystic breasts, food and sugar cravings, uterine fibroids, and others.  Another key factor for female hormone levels is stress.  As we are stressed out, the body responds by activating the thyroid gland, which releases cortisol and other hormones.

These hormones affect the normal female reproductive hormones.  Thus, chronic stress can permanently alter your levels of hormones.  Make time for yourself and de-stress.  It is very important to actually get a test of your hormone levels.  It is also important to get a full blood work up to rule out any other causes before starting a treatment plan of any kind.
